Executive Directors

met while attending Princeton University, where Marlene majored in psychology. Marlene also graduated from the University of South Florida with a Master of Business Administration degree and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Given their passion for strengthening marriages and families, they are the founders and Co-Executive Directors of Marriage Builders Family Resource Center in operation since 2004.  They are long time residents of Sarasota since 1982 and recently celebrated their 30^th wedding anniversary. Jim is an ordained minister and is actively involved in the community along with his two sons, Daniel and Jonathan.

Jim led the signing of the nation’s 202^nd Community Marriage Policy in Sarasota and Manatee counties on February 17, 2006.  They are both P.A.I.R.S. (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills) trained professionals and Relationship Coaches. Having facilitated many marriage and family workshops they are available to speak at conferences, radio and television programs.  They have also been presenters at the Building Healthy and Lasting Relationships Marriage conference sponsored by the Commission on Marriage and Family Support Initiatives through funding by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
 

Marvin Hendon, Ph.D., Clinical Supervisor and Psychologist

A native of Miami, Dr. Marvin K. Hendon is a graduate of Dade County schools. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1977. In 1982, he received a Masters in Counseling Psychology, with a thesis on "The Effectiveness of Field Experience on Vocational Maturity and Reducing Career Indecision in Undergraduate Students". The University of Florida produced its youngest Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1985, when he earned his degree. His dissertation investigated "Evaluative Research on the Holistic Approach to Care and Treatment of the Terminally Ill."

His awards include the Board of Regents Minority Scholarship, the Graduate Professional Opportunities Fellowship, the Graduate Minority Fellowship and Who's Who in the Health Care Profession. His research experience covers a spectrum from conducting laboratory studies on the effects of L-Dopa on the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease to the design and organization of data for evaluative research on the emotional responses of terminally ill patients.

Dr. Hendon's teaching experience began at the university, where he served as a graduate teaching assistant. Upon relocating to Sarasota, in 1985, he accepted a position as adjunct professor at Manatee Community College. In 1986, he joined the faculty at the Westcoast School, where he taught Introduction to Psychology and Abnormal Psychology.

His clinical experience in Sarasota began in 1986 at PsyLab Psychological Services, where he performed psychological, intellectual and vocational assessments, and family and group therapy. Several months later, he opened a private practice, where he was to serve clients in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties for thirteen years. During that time, Dr. Hendon served as consultant to the Florida Department of Labor and Employment, the Child Protection Center and several nursing homes.

His service to the Westcoast School led to an appointment to the School Board, and later, to the position of Assistant Principal. In Fall of 2000, he became the first principal to serve after the founder. A sought-after presenter, his expertise has been requested in a variety of venues, including presentations to the Sarasota County Commission on the Status of Children. He has been a guest on several local television programs. His workshops and presentations have included topics such as Coping with Stress, Emotional Effects of Child Abuse and Neglect, Psycho-social Needs of the Elderly, and Insight into Interpersonal Communication and its Relationship to Mental Health Stress Management.

Dr. Hendon embarked on a career with Health South, in 1998. His position as Clinical Psychologist has afforded opportunities to work with a variety of patients in the areas of rehabilitation. He is also an ordained minister and is married to Deborah Faye, and they have two children: Diesi and Marvin II.

Harry L. Morgan, Ph.D.

Harry was born in 1947 and was born again in 1970 during the Asbury Revival. Though he grew up in the church, was religious, served in church leadership since the age of 14, even stayed in a monastery for two months, he was not a Christian until the age of 22 through his studies in the book of Romans.

Harry received a B.A. in Philosophy & Religion from Asbury College; a Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) from Asbury Theological Seminary; a Masters in Theology (Th.M.) from Princeton Theological Seminary, a M.A. in mental health counseling at Argosy University, and a Ph.D. from Bethany Theological Seminary (summa cum laude). His doctoral dissertation is entitled Biblical Perspectives of Intra-familial Child Sexual Abuse. He did postgraduate studies in archeology with LaGrange College in Nazareth, Israel; in psychology at Oberlin College; in ecumenism at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at the University of Kentucky. Harry is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College and the Air War College.

He joined the IFCA in 1973 and has served as a pastor from 1967 to 2003 and as a chap-lain in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1970 to 1999. His final tour of duty was as the III CORPS (IMA) chaplain responsible for the mobilization of all National Guard and Re-serve Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants West of the Mississippi.

He has lectured at Temple (Philadelphia, PA) and Rutgers (Camden, NJ) Law Schools and served on the faculties of Foundations Bible College (Gull Lake, Michigan); MED (Krakow, Poland); Solid Rock Theological Seminary (Guyana); Echoing Hills (Ghana, West Africa), and Christian Theological Seminary (New Delhi, India). He has also served as faculty advisor , coordinator of the counseling department and adjunct professor at Webster University / Sarasota Campus.

Harry is presently the Clinical Director of the Biblical Counseling Center in Palmetto, Florida and the Director of Counseling Services with IMI/SOS International. Harry has been married to Bonny 35 years. They have three grown daughters: Kara, Rebekah & Rachel, and three grandchildren: Ethan, Katherine and Lucas.
